Cal dialled the Knight Frank number and eased the bedside phone between his chin and his shoulder as he doodled on a notepad. It was 9.30 am, and he was not expecting anyone to be there on a Sunday, but he had decided to leave another message on Aliceâs voicemail.
To his surprise, the phone was answered. He asked for Aliceâs extension. There was a brief silence, followed by âHold on.â
The line went dead. After a few moments, a male voice came on.
âHello, can I help you?â
âYes, my nameâs Grant. Jonathan Grant. I had an appointment with Alice Wickman yesterday afternoon for a flat viewing. We had arranged to meet at the property but missed each other. I want to reschedule.â
A beat.
âHello?â
âWait a moment Mr Grant.â The line dropped again.
Then: âI understand you wish to speak to Miss Wickman?â Deeper, more authoritative.
âWell, I wasnât expecting her to be in,â he said. He was beginning to feel mildly irritated. âI simply wanted to leave a message.â
âYou were due to see her yesterday evening at... let me see now⦠five, is that right?â
âNo, five-thirty.â
âFive thirty?â queried the voice.
âCorrect.â
âDid you meet up with her, Mr Grant?â
Cal hesitated. âDid I meet Alice? No, she didnât show. Look, can you put me through or not? Whatâs going on?â
âAnd how long did you wait for her, Mr Grant? What did you do when she didnât appear?â
âAnd you are?â
âDetective Inspector Burroughs, Kensington CID. Weâre investigating her murder.â
âMurder?â
âThatâs right, Mr Grant, last night, and it may be that you were the last person to have seen her alive. Would you be able to come down to the station to answer a few questions?â
His mind froze. Murdered? He wasnât ready for this. He needed time to think.
âMr. Grant, are you there?â
He made a decision. He hung up and dialled a number on his burner phone.
âHello?â said a voice.
âFrank, itâs Cal.â
âOh, hello, mate. Whatâs happening? Not seen you around for a while. Emily says youâve gone to Oslo.â
âI need to see you. Are you home?â
âToday? Wellâ¦â
âItâs important. Somethingâs happened. I need your help. Wait for me. Iâll be back in a couple of hours.â
