Cal dialled the Knight Frank number and eased the bedside phone between his chin and his shoulder as he doodled on a notepad. It was 9.30 am, and he was not expecting anyone to be there on a Sunday, but he had decided to leave another message on Alice’s voicemail.

To his surprise, the phone was answered. He asked for Alice’s extension. There was a brief silence, followed by ‘Hold on.’

The line went dead. After a few moments, a male voice came on.

‘Hello, can I help you?’

‘Yes, my name’s Grant. Jonathan Grant. I had an appointment with Alice Wickman yesterday afternoon for a flat viewing. We had arranged to meet at the property but missed each other. I want to reschedule.’

A beat.

‘Hello?’

‘Wait a moment Mr Grant.’ The line dropped again.

Then: ‘I understand you wish to speak to Miss Wickman?’ Deeper, more authoritative.

‘Well, I wasn’t expecting her to be in,’ he said. He was beginning to feel mildly irritated. ‘I simply wanted to leave a message.’

‘You were due to see her yesterday evening at... let me see now… five, is that right?’

‘No, five-thirty.’

‘Five thirty?’ queried the voice.

‘Correct.’

‘Did you meet up with her, Mr Grant?’

Cal hesitated. ‘Did I meet Alice? No, she didn’t show. Look, can you put me through or not? What’s going on?’

‘And how long did you wait for her, Mr Grant? What did you do when she didn’t appear?’

‘And you are?’

‘Detective Inspector Burroughs, Kensington CID. We’re investigating her murder.’

‘Murder?’

‘That’s right, Mr Grant, last night, and it may be that you were the last person to have seen her alive. Would you be able to come down to the station to answer a few questions?’

His mind froze. Murdered? He wasn’t ready for this. He needed time to think.

‘Mr. Grant, are you there?’

He made a decision. He hung up and dialled a number on his burner phone.

‘Hello?’ said a voice.

‘Frank, it’s Cal.’

‘Oh, hello, mate. What’s happening? Not seen you around for a while. Emily says you’ve gone to Oslo.’

‘I need to see you. Are you home?’

‘Today? Well…’

‘It’s important. Something’s happened. I need your help. Wait for me. I’ll be back in a couple of hours.’
